Tips for Winners

This month three of my colleagues lost their jobs.

These folks are not losers. They are high-performing individuals caught in the crunch of job cutbacks. Now each one is struggling to find their place in the new economy.

The advice I'd give them is..."Stay true to your talents!"  In today's market, leveraging your talents is the best way to fire-proof your career and ensure career viability.

Your talents are what you do easily and naturally. As a matter of fact, they are so easy you probably take them for granted. In my coaching work with literally thousands of leaders, the single biggest mistake individuals make is thinking their talents are 'no big deal.'

Think of work experiences you enjoy and feel great about — this is your talent zone. In your talent zone you consistently deliver better results. Not to mention the appreciation you receive from others!

You have 5-7 core talents. When you're in a role that uses these talents, you're happy and productive. Unfortunately only 20% of us are now IN our talent zone.

Your talents help you when ever ...

#1. You're looking for a new job. Knowing your talents helps you move beyond desperate to deliberate. You'll choose jobs and roles that play to your strengths.

#2. You're ready to advance your career. Knowing your talents helps you align with the right projects. You see where your talents add value and use your expertise in ways that benefit others.

#3. You're teaming with others. Knowing your talents helps you be a team player. Appreciating talent differences increases respect for what everyone brings to the table.

In today's economy, your talents are the only-thing you can bank on! Whether you are an independent contractor, internal employee, business owner or sales person, investing in your talents pays big dividends.

Don't rely on the stimulus package to get your career into high gear. Tap into your talents and stay viable in today's marketplace.

Strengths Enhance Career Viability

When others ask, "What are your strengths?" Do you answer with a lack luster response like; ‘I enjoy working with people.' Or do you communicate the real value you bring?

In today's market, capitalizing on your strengths ensures the right job fit and shortens the time it takes you to find a new job. Start playing to your strengths and you'll instantly exude greater authenticity and credibility.

Here are great questions to help you identify your strengths...

Leaders Face Crisis of Commitment

In the news today there's lots of talk about what ails our organizations and nation. Everyone's afraid. We watch as the world and financial markets spin out of control. We're hesitant to step forward. We're scared of our shadow and what's around the next corner.

Yet I believe our troubles can be summed up in a few words...we have a crisis of commitment.

Trust in short supply

Trust is in short supply when Governor Rod Blagojevich attempts to sell the recently vacated Senate seat by Obama. We're a nation of leaders greatly in need of trust.
