Strengths Enhance Career Viability

Your interest and talents show up everywhere your life - especially early in life.

#1. As a teenage what did you enjoy doing? Did you prefer to read books or hang out with friends? What groups did you join? What subjects in school interested you most?

Notice where these early interests show up in your worklife today? What projects do you enjoy that use these same talents? Early interests are clear indicators of your best talents.

#2. What tasks are easy and effortless for you? Look at your work and the activities you enjoy. Do you like to be the organizer — or are you the ideal guest? Do you make all the arrangements — or add a the spark of enthusiasm to the mix? Do you like to listen — or encourage others to talk? Stop focusing on what you don't do well! Identify the activities you enjoy and make these a priority.

#3. What do others say you do well? Listen carefully to what others say. When you hand in a report or lead a seminar, do others say, “Wow, that was great.” Or “You certainly made that look easy.” You can also ask others, “What do I do well? What task do I catch on to quickly?

When others says to you, “How did you do that?” or “That’s amazing!” it’s a reliable indicator of your talents. And when you hear this, stop saying, “Oh, it’s nothing” If you hear yourself saying, “No problem. It’s easy.” Recognize this is one of your top talents.

#4: When do you annoy others? What ever you do well, you also do to a fault. Listen to other’s complaints and frustrations. Amazingly, these complaints can help you see your true talents.

If someone says, you’re just ‘too enthusiastic’, ‘too picky’, or ‘too demanding’ — realize the flipside of this quality is one of your talents. An over-the-top enthusiast might be a dynamic public speaker, the picky administrator could be great with details, and a demanding person might be strong advocate.

Once you know your strengths — use them! Very quickly you'll start to feel more valued and appreciated. And if you have to go job hunting, it will be easier to find the right job because you know what you're good at and you radiate confidence.
