Stop Organizational A.D.D.

Faith Ralston Is your organization suffering from A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder)? If so, everyone is racing from meeting to meeting. Projects are spinning out of control. Everything is important. There's lots of activity, but few results to show for it.

For children and adults with A.D.D. there's a medical remedy. But for organizations and leaders, there's no quick fix. Chaos and confusion destroy profits and productivity faster than the fiercest competitors.

What's often underneath this frantic activity is overwhelm, hopelessness and fear. Here's what you can do when you see yourself and others spinning out of control.

1. Pause
Catch your breath. Call time out. Look past the immediate crisis de' jour. Stop running and take time to pause and reflect. Don't allow yourself to be caught in the rip tide. Disconnect from the frenzy. Take time to think!

2. Connect
Grab a few colleagues. Gather your team. Spend 30 minutes together. Talk about what's going right, what's needed and how you feel. Recognize the pressure and strain you're under. It takes only a minute to connect. Sharing as human beings helps rejuvenate us and puts the wind in our sails.

3. Focus
Narrow your focus. Clarify what's important. Eliminate extraneous activities. Choose only 3 priorities. Hone your priorities down to a sacred few. Challenge yourself to describe what you want to achieve in one simple sentence. Focus on the vital few - not the trivial many.

4. Select
Give up making ‘To Do' lists that are longer than your arm. Remember, there are only 24 hours in a day. Make trade off decisions. Be brave. Enlist your boss in making trade off decisions. Do less to achieve more.

5. Simplify
Un-complicate implementation. Break down solutions into easy, doable steps. Give up complicated charts and tracking mechanisms. They waste valuable time. Focus on what you can do today. Recognize progress. Appreciate ease. Simplify every step of the way.

It's easy to catch the crazies. And it's risky to challenge the status quo. But little comes from spinning out of control.
